Weapons Safety Rules

  1. Never let any public handle your weapons.

  2. Always treat the gun as loaded.

  3. Never have a loaded musket in camp.

  4. All flintlocks are required to have a flashguard and frizzen cover. (Exceptions may be made by HL leadership with site permission on a case by case basis for rifle firing demonstrations)

  5. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Away from people.

  6. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

  7. Don’t load your musket until instructed to.

  8. Elevate your musket above you opponent’s head.

  9. If you cannot get your weapon to fire after 2 tries, secure you weapon. You must then take casualty or move behind the rear rank and make adjustments to you weapon. Look to NCO or CO for guidance in this situation.

  10. Once shooting begins, be aware that the barrel can become extremely hot.or

  11. Never bring live (with ball) cartridges to an event.

  12. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading. Will be done at safety check.

  13. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully bump the musket.

  14. Don't rely on the gun's safety (half cock) to keep it from firing.

  15. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don't trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the musket at anyone or anything.

  16. Cartridges should only be carried in your cartridge box.

  17. All edged weapons must have a sheath or covering for the blade.

  18. Do not unsheathe or uncover bladed weapons on the field unless directed to by the officer commanding.
